If you need a specific payload capacity, then make sure you check the maximum capacity of any trim you’re thinking about buying. They vary considerably. If you need a Tundra model with the highest payload capacity, then look to the rear-wheel-drive Double Cab version of the SR5 with a 3.4-liter Turbo V6 engine and a 6.5-foot bed. This model enables you to tow up to 1,940 pounds.

Hitch Up a Heavy Trailer

The truck with the highest payload capacity also has the Tundra’s maximum towing capacity of 12,000 pounds. So, if you need the strongest Tundra of all, the Double Cab SR5 with the 6.5-foot bed and 3.4-liter V6 is your best bet. If having the strongest model isn’t important to you, but you still need a high maximum towing capacity, then make sure you check the maximum towing capacity of every Tundra model you consider.

Models with very similar builds have very different payload capacities. For example, a Tundra SR with the same cab size, engine, and bed length as the strongest Tundra can haul up to 8.300 pounds, and that’s a pretty drastic difference to someone who needs something stronger. Every version of the Tundra has a high towing capacity, but some can tackle more weight than others.
