The entire 2024 Toyota Tacoma lineup was given a significant overhaul this year that includes modernized features, improved powertrains, and more. It’s easy to see how the line earned a spot on Car and Driver’s 2024 Editors’ Choice list.

Design

The 2024 Tacoma’s attractively contemporary cabin has a raised ceiling that creates additional spaciousness. The recently redesigned roof features squared angles, which also add extra headroom that tall occupants will thoroughly enjoy. Finding a comfortable traveling position will present no problem with all the steering wheel and seat adjustments available.

A major benefit of this line is the choice of two bed sizes it offers. All Extended Cabin models have six-foot truck beds. However, the Double Cab models also have a five-foot bed option if you’d prefer.

Performance

There’s no question about the 2024 Tacoma’s capability. This is an authentic workhorse that can tow up to 6,500 pounds and support a payload of up to 1,705 pounds. Better yet, all off-road models are equipped with any hardware you might need for adventuring in the wild.

All Tacoma models have standard part-time 4-wheel drive on demand and an 8-speed automatic transmission. A turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine delivering 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque is standard on the two lowest trims. Though this is undoubtedly a tough truck, the Tacoma is quite well-behaved on the highway. It has accurate, light steering and quick, smooth shifting that combine to offer refined handling you can enjoy even on a work truck.

Technology

The 2024 Tacoma’s technology features were refreshed along with everything else when the lineup received a major redesign this year. The base model has a standard 4-speaker sound system with AM/FM stereo and satellite radio, plus a 3-month free trial subscription for SiriusXM. This model also has an infotainment system featuring an 8-inch multimedia touchscreen display; higher trims offer a standard enormous 14-inch screen that displays maps and exterior camera views beautifully.

Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard across the line. You can use them to safely and easily access your phone’s content, including audio streaming, maps, and more.

Safety

The 2024 Tacoma was built to handle the toughest conditions, and that’s when you need maximum protection. Toyota has installed important advanced driver’s aid and safety technology throughout the line, so the following features will be standard on any model you choose:

  • Backup Camera with Projected Path
  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Trailer Merge Warning
  • Front and Rear Parking Assist with Automatic Braking
